Kids Yoga Book: Review of Rachel’s Day in the Garden

May 3, 2016

Books that include actions are wonderful for engaging busy little kids in reading activities, so I loved the new yoga book, Rachel’s Day in the Garden: A Kids Yoga Spring Colors Bookwhich combines gorgeous pictures with simple yoga poses just right for young children.

Rachels-Day-in-the-Garden-Front-Cover-Reward-700I received a copy of the book to review, and read it with my three-year-old, who happily joined me trying out the different poses. The mix of easy poses and more challenging ones was just right for keeping him interested and enjoying himself.

The story is about a little girl and her puppy looking for signs of spring in the garden, so it’s perfect for just now. Each page has a picture of the little girl, Rachel, doing a yoga pose for the reader to copy. The poses tie in to her discoveries in nature: she crawls like a caterpillar, buzzes like a bee, grows like a tree and flutters like a butterfly. It’s aimed at preschoolers aged 3-6, but I think would suit some 2-year-olds too. rachels-day-in-the-garden4-400

According to the author, Giselle Shardlow of Kids Yoga Stories, yoga has lots of important benefits for kids of this age:

  • increases strength and flexibility
  • helps them relax, unwind, and calm down to reduce stress and anxiety
  • helps them sleep better
  • promotes interaction between adult and child, and between multiple children
  • improves their fine and gross motor skills, as well as their coordination
  • develops self-confidence, self-expression, and body awareness
  • promotes a healthy, active lifestyle

Combine this with a story just right for the weather right now, and the book makes an ideal spring activity for my sons and I to share.

There’s even a video reading of the book, if you want to see if it will suit your child:

Thanks for sharing it with us! As I said, my little guys love books where they get to do actions too, so I think yoga books are a great idea. Best of luck with the book.
